The Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Wednesday said the latest decision by the Centre to withdraw the case against Italian businessman Ottavio Quattrocchi completes the ``cover-up’’ in the Bofors bribery case.

In a statement, the party Polit Bureau said that at every stage, successive Governments headed by the Congress have resorted to various devices to derail the case and protect Mr. Quattrocchi.

``The CBI was prevented from pursuing the case seriously. With this latest act, the cover up of the Bofors bribery case is now complete,’’ the statement said.

The party's reaction came after the Centre told the Supreme Court on Tuesday that it had decided to withdraw the case against Mr. Quattrocchi, an accused in the Rs. 64 Crore Bofors pay-off case, which is pending before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate court in Delhi.

The case is coming up for hearing on October 3 before the CMM and the CBI would file an application for closure of the case.
