The British Government on Sunday confirmed that one of the suspects in the Woolwich murder case was arrested in Kenya in 2010 for trying to cross into Somalia to join the extremist group al-Shabaab.
Michael Adebolajo was held with five other men close to the Somali border and later deported to Britain. The Foreign Office said he was given consular assistance "as normal’’ in such cases.
A friend of his, Abu Nusaybah, told the BBC earlier that he claimed he went to Kenya to study, and alleged that he was "tortured’’ by Kenyan troops. On his return, he was reportedly approached by MI5 who wanted to know if he would like to work for them.
Adebolajo, (28) , and Michael Adebowale ( 22) were arrested for allegedly killing a British soldier, Lee Rigby, in the London suburb of Woolwich on Wednesday.
