West Asia talks to resume next week

August 09, 2013 11:20 pm | Updated 11:20 pm IST - Washington:

The peace negotiations between Israel and Palestine would resume in Jerusalem on August 14, the Obama administration has said.

“Negotiations between the Israelis and Palestinians will be resuming August 14th in Jerusalem and will be followed by a meeting in Jericho,” State Department spokesperson Jen Psaki said.

“I think the schedule of meetings is still being worked through, and as we’ve talked about before, of course, there will be some meetings that they may not participate in,” she said.

American officials would be travelling to the region for the talks.

Secretary of State John Kerry does not expect to make any announcement after this round of talks, she said.

Such an announcement came as Israel approved the construction of more than 800 new homes in Jewish settlements on occupied West Bank land.

Settlements

“Our position on settlements has not changed. We do not accept the legitimacy of continued settlement activity and oppose any efforts to legitimise settlement outposts,” said Ms. Psaki.

“The Secretary has made clear that he believes both of the negotiating teams are at the table in good faith and are committed to working together to make progress. We are speaking to the Government of Israel and making our concerns known,” she said.
