Several people have been injured in violence at a chrome mine in northern South Africa, officials said on Tuesday.
The nature of violence at the Lanxess mine near Rustenburg was as yet unclear, a spokeswoman for the firm said by telephone.
Employees at the mine started an illegal strike on Thursday, apparently in a fight over bonus payments.
South Africa’s mining sector is again seeing growing unrest, as workers demand higher pay. The labour action has started to spread to the manufacturing sector.
Thousands of striking workers at a Mercedes-Benz plant are returning to work, following a court order.
Their union, the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa, has said it continues to support the employees’ demand for salary increases.
