This week, State Department Spokeperson Jen Psaki responded to reports that the Indian Government was investigating allegations of tax evasion by persons working at the American Embassy School in New Delhi.
In a briefing, Ms. Psaki said that while the school “has succeeded in providing an international education in New Delhi for the children of diplomatic and ex-pat business communities… It is not run by the Embassy [and] only about a third of the students there are American.”
She added that the State Department was in discussion with the Government of India regarding issues they have raised concerning the school, and U.S. Deputy Secretary William Burns had discussed “these very issues with [Indian Ambassador S. Jaishankar] earlier this week, and we are committed to resolving them through diplomatic channels and to addressing the concerns that have been raised.”
The controversy regarding the school marks the latest twist in the continuing saga of reciprocal measures taken by India after the U.S.’ arrest and indictment of Devyani Khobragade.
