The President of the United Arab Emirates suffered a stroke, but is now in a stable condition, the official news agency WAM reported on Saturday.

Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed al—Nahyan “suffered a stroke on Friday morning. He immediately underwent a surgical operation.

His health is now stable,” the agency quoted the Ministry of Presidential Affairs as saying, without elaborating. Khalifa, 66, became the President of the UAE in 2004. However, he had effectively been acting President since the late 1990s as his father, Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, was ill for several years before his death.
