Two men were arrested on suspicion of terrorism in a raid on an Islamic centre in Brisbane on Wednesday, Australian Federal Police (AFP) said.

Police counterterrorism chief Neil Gaughan told reporters the men, aged 31 and 21, would be charged with offences related to the Syrian conflict.

One of the men, the brother of a man believed to be Australia’s first suicide bomber in Syria, would be charged with providing funding to the militant group Al-Nusra Front, Mr. Gaughan said.

The other suspect would be charged with recruiting fighters and preparing for incursions into Syria, he said.

“I would like to stress that there is no information or intelligence available to police or security agencies at this time to indicate that these males were involved in terrorism attack planning in Australia,” he said.

“We have seized some crossbows, we have seized a significant amount of electronic data that we need to work through, and we have seized a firearm.”

Mr. Gaughan said the raid conducted by 180 members of the AFP and Queensland police with nine search warrants for the suburb of Logan and other Brisbane suburbs was a culmination of a 12-month investigation.
