The US on Monday confirmed that two Americans who were soldiers with the Israel Defense Force have been killed in fighting in the Gaza Strip. “We can confirm the deaths of US citizens Max Steinberg and Sean Carmeli in Gaza,” State Department Spokesperson Jen Psaki said.

24-year-old Steinberg, whose family lives in California, was a sharpshooter for the Golani Brigade and was one of 13 soldiers killed in fighting on Saturday. 21-year-old Carmeli, who was from Texas, was a soldier in the same Golani Brigade. He was killed in combat in Gaza.

No further details were immediately available. “Out of respect for those affected by this, we have nothing further at this time,” Ms. Psaki said.
