Syrian Reconciliation Minister Ali Haidar survived an assassination attempt on Saturday near the coastal area of Tartous, Syrian activists and pro-regime media reported.
Lebanese television broadcaster al-Mayadeen, which is close to the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, said the driver was killed when the car came under fire.
Haider’s son was killed in 2012 when his car was ambushed by rebels in the central province of Homs.
The conflict in Syria, which began with anti-government protests in March 2011, has left more than 100,000 people killed, according to UN estimates.
