The driver of the train that derailed in Spain, killing 79 people, was on the phone with railway staff at the moment of the accident, preliminary data from the train’s black box recorder revealed on Tuesday.
Francisco Jose Garzon received a call from the staff at rail company Renfe to discuss the route he needed to follow, investigators said.
Noise that was recorded in the black box indicates that Mr. Garzon was consulting a map or some other document.
The train was driving at 192 kilometres per hour in a curve, where the speed limit was 80 kilometres.
