Shanghai Tower to be world’s second tallest

Construction workers have laid the last beam on what will soon be unveiled as China’s tallest building — the 632-metre Shanghai Tower.

A ceremony on Saturday celebrated the “topping-out” of the 125-storey building, which is set to become the world’s second tallest, surpassed only by the 830-metre Burj Khalifa in Dubai.

The tower, likely to open in 2015, houses offices and a luxury hotel. Built in Shanghai’s Pudong financial district, the building towers over iconic skyscrapers that have defined the Shanghai skyline, including the 492-metre World Financial Centre — unveiled as China’s tallest building only five years ago — and the 420-metre Jin Mao tower.

However, the Shanghai Tower may lose its status even before it’s unveiled: an 838-metre skyscraper is being built in Changsha, southern Hunan province, which may be unveiled as soon as next year.
