Serb politician gunned down in Kosovo

Police said unidentified gunmen have shot and killed a local Serb councillor in the northern town of Mitrovica.

Dimitrije Janicijevic, 35, was killed early Thursday with shots fired from a handgun.

Janicijevic was a member of the newly-elected local council in this ethnically divided town. He also ran for mayor of the Serb part of Mitrovica, and his party collaborates with ethnic Albanians. That vote was annulled and will be held again next month after the Serb winner refused to swear allegiance to Kosovo’s ethnic Albanian authorities.

Serb participation in Kosovo’s local elections was part of attempts to normalise relations between Kosovo and Serbia. Kosovo has declared its independence from Serbia in 2008, a move rejected by Belgrade.
