Russia has sent a reconnaissance ship to the waters off Syria, media reports said on Monday.

The Pryazovia left the Russian navy base Sevastopol in Ukraine late on Sunday and was heading to the eastern Mediterranean, news agencies citing military sources said.

The ship’s mission will be to collect information about the escalating conflict in Syria, the Itar-Tass news agency quoted a source in the Russian General Staff. “This is normal practice for any navy,” the source added.

The reports said the Pryazovia was not part of the small Russian Navy contingent permanently stationed in the region.
