Florence Mayor Matteo Renzi has been asked by Italian President Giorgio Napolitano to form a new government.

The appointment was announced by Mr. Napolitano’s office after he held talks with Mr. Renzi.

The prime ministerial-designate was said to have accepted the nomination “with reserve” — a usual precaution that allows prospective premiers to sound out coalition partners before formally taking up office.
