Seven inmates were stabbed to death with home-made weapons in a prison fight in northern Mexico late on Saturday, officials said.

Nine other prisoners had admitted to taking part in the brawl in the town of Altamira in Tamaulipas state, and were being questioned, the Public Security Ministry and prosecutor’s office said.

The victims were aged 20 to 59, and serving sentences on a variety of convictions, including drug trafficking and carrying unlicensed weapons.
