Police kill six suspected gang leaders in Mexico

A shootout between police and suspected gang members in northern Mexico left six of the suspects dead on Friday.

The clash occurred at a checkpoint on a rural road between Altar and Caborca in Sonora state, El Universal newspaper reported.

A spokesman for the state governor confirmed the incident, but declined to comment on the number of victims. Sonora borders the United States and is home to the powerful Sinaloa cartel.
