One foreign worker was killed and nine injured in riots at a detention centre in Saudi Arabia, a police spokesman said on Monday.

Ati al—Qurashi said illegal workers started a riot in al—Shumaisi detention centre near the western city of Jeddah late Sunday.

The worker was killed in a stampede.

Last year, Saudi authorities expelled thousands of migrants, mostly from Yemen.

In November, an Ethiopian man was killed in the capital Riyadh as authorities cracked down on illegal migrant workers at the end of a seven—month amnesty for foreigners whose work permits had expired or who were not working for their official sponsor.

In late October, officials announced that 951,272 migrant workers had left the kingdom.
