Thirteen more people were rescued after a boat carrying tourists from Europe and New Zealand sank off eastern Indonesia, bringing survivors to 23, an official said on Monday. Two people were still missing after the accident off Bima district in West Nusa Tenggara province late Saturday, said Jarudin, the head of the local disaster management agency.
The 13, including Dutch and Italian nationals as well as five Indonesisan crew members and guides, were rescued by fishermen late on Sunday, said Jarudin, who like many Indonesians goes by one name. The boat was carrying 20 tourists and five Indonesian crew members and guides from the resort island of Bali to Komodo Island when it hit a rock and leaked, officials said. Komodo Island is home to the Komodo dragon giant lizard and a popular destination for divers. The 10 tourists rescued earlier Sunday included one French, two Dutch, two Germans, three New Zealanders and two Spaniards.
