Kosovo thermal plant blast kills 4

June 06, 2014 04:55 pm | Updated 05:47 pm IST - Belgrade

At least four people were killed and 14 injured on Friday when an explosion rocked a thermal power plant on the outskirts of Kosovo’s capital, Pristina.

Police in Pristina confirmed the death toll and said that the A bloc of the Obilic coal-powered plant was evacuated out of concern that another blast was possible.

Pristina University Hospital reported that the 14 people treated there were not suffering life-threatening conditions.

“The threat is not over yet, but the danger zone has been evacuated. Special teams are ready, all workers were brought to safety,” Prime Minister Hashim Thaci told reporters.

According to initial suspicions, the explosion was caused by a gas leak. The blast was powerful enough to cause damage to houses in the vicinity of the plant, local reports said.
