Israeli FM Lieberman ends alliance with Netanyahu

Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman is ending his political alliance with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, he announced on Monday, signalling rough waters ahead for the governing coalition.

Although Mr. Lieberman will keep his Israel Beiteinu party in the coalition for now, he said his party will be a competitor to Mr. Netnyahu’s nationalist Likud party the next time voters head to the polls, with Mr. Lieberman at its head.

“It’s no secret, to my regret, that of late, the differences of opinion between the Prime Minister and myself have become significant and strong,” he said. He also severely criticised Mr. Netanyahu’s hesitance to launch a major offensive against Hamas in Gaza.
