Islamic State militants attacked an oil field near Libya’s central coast, prompting a counterattack by the government in Tripoli that involved airstrikes, an official said on Wednesday.

The militants swept down from the central city of Sirte and attacked the al-Dhahra oil field to the south, trading fire with guards and blowing up residential and administrative buildings before eventually retreating, said Oil Minister Mashallah al-Zewi.

It was not immediately clear if there were workers or engineers at the site during the attack.
