Negotiations about alleged Iranian nuclear weapons projects should follow a new approach, Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said as he met International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) chief Yukiya Amano Tuesday in Vienna.
IAEA experts were set to meet Iranian counterparts later in the day, in talks aimed at finally winning Tehran’s approval for on-site verification of Western intelligence findings that point to nuclear weapons research projects.
“It is very important for all of us that we can show concrete progress,” Amano said at the start of the talks.
“It is the time to take a new approach regarding questions between Iran and the IAEA and to look to the future for further cooperation, in order to ensure the peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear programme,” Araghchi responded.
The previous round in late September had been the first since the inauguration of Iranian President Hassan Rowhani, who is aiming to quickly resolve the nuclear dispute and to get sanctions lifted.
Diplomats said both sides did not make any progress in that meeting, even though it was held in a more constructive atmosphere than previous rounds.
