Good show by Kremlin critic in Moscow mayoral poll

Alexei Navalny (37), a fierce critic of the Kremlin has made a surprisingly strong showing in Moscow’s mayoral election. He won more than 27 per cent of the votes in Sunday’s election, falling just short of forcing his chief opponent, the Kremlin-backed incumbent Sergei Sobyanin into a runoff. In July, Mr. Navalny was sentenced to five years in jail in what appeared to be a politically motivated verdict but released pending appeal following large protests in Moscow and St. Petersburg.
