A Dutch transport aircraft with 14 coffins left the eastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv for the Netherlands, transporting the first victims of the downing of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17.

Government representatives from Ukraine, the Netherlands, Malaysia and Australia attended a ceremony in Kharkiv, which was broadcast live on Dutch television.

After speeches and a minute of silence, the wooden coffins were loaded onto the aircraft.

An Australian plane will be transporting 24 coffins to the Netherlands later in the day.
