Explosion rocks north Malian town of Kidal

September 29, 2013 07:18 pm | Updated November 16, 2021 09:09 pm IST - KIDAL, Mali

An official in the northern Malian town of Kidal says an explosion has gone off near a distribution site for the United Nations World Food Program.

Daouda Maiga, a local official in Kidal, said that it was not immediately clear whether there were casualties following Sunday’s blast.

Mr. Maiga said the force of the explosion had blown apart the roof and walls of the building where aid supplies were being stored.

Sunday’s explosion marks the latest violence to erupt in northern Mali in the days since separatist rebels withdrew from a peace accord signed with the Malian government.

On Saturday, two people were killed and seven others wounded in Timbuktu after suicide bombers blew up their vehicle near a military camp.
