European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton had a surprise meeting with ousted former Egyptian president Mohamed Morsy late Monday, her spokeswoman said.
Spokeswoman Maja Kocijancic said on her Twitter feed that Ms. Ashton and Mr. Morsy had an “in-depth discussion” lasting two hours.
Mr. Morsy is in army detention at an undisclosed location, facing charges of conspiring with Islamist group Hamas to carry out “hostile acts.” Ms. Ashton was on her second visit to Egypt since widespread political unrest gripped the country following Mr. Morsy’s ouster on July 3.
