Dozens of people were killed in fighting between Shiite Houthi militants and members of a Sunni tribe in northern Yemen, local media reported.
Fighters from the Hashid tribe managed to reseize several areas in Amran province from the Houthi fighters during Friday’s clashes, the Mareb Press website reported.
The regional Al Arabiya broadcaster put the toll at 61.
Tensions began in October when Houthis accused Sunni Salafists based in the northern town of Dammaj of mobilizing extremists from across Yemen and abroad to fight against them.
The government reportedly sent a team of officials who mediated a truce in Dammaj, located in Saada province, in November.
In recent years, Yemen has been plagued by al—Qaeda attacks as well as sectarian fighting between the Houthis and Sunnis.
