Death toll in Haiyan in Philippines tops 5000

The death toll from Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines jumped to 5,209, with 1,611 missing, the government said.

Most of the fatalities — 4,919 people — were killed in the Eastern Visayas region, which was worst hit by Haiyan, according to Interior Secretary Mar Roxas.

Another 290 were killed in 14 central and southern provinces affected by the November 8 typhoon, the national disaster relief agency said.
