A Jordanian court on Wednesday acquitted radical cleric Abu Qatada of terrorism-related charges and he is expected to be freed.

The presiding judge of the military’s State Security Court said in a televised session that there was insufficient evidence to show that Abu Qatada was involved in a plan to attack foreigners in 2000 known as the “millennium bombings” plot.

Books by Abu Qatada, who had denied the charges against him, were allegedly found among the possessions of the plotters, according to prosecutors.

Abu Qatada was deported from Britain in 2013 following a protracted legal battle. British courts had accused him of being linked to al-Qaeda.
