The four children of a Malaysian couple facing a child abuse case in Sweden arrived in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday after Swedish authorities allowed them to return home.
The children, aged between 7 and 14, met with Prime Minister Najib Razak shortly after arriving at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport.
They were accompanied by Malaysian deputy foreign minister Hamzah Zainuddin on their trip from Stockholm to Kuala Lumpur.
Najib thanked the Swedish government for allowing the children to return to Malaysia. Prior to their return, the four children had been under the care of a foster family.
The parents of the children, Tourism Malaysia director in Stockholm Azizul Raheem Awalludin and his wife Shalwati Nurshal, were arrested in Stockholm on December 18 for allegedly hitting one of their children for not praying.
Smacking children has been illegal in Sweden since 1979.
The detained couple are now on trial for child abuse in a Swedish court.
