At least five Yemeni soldiers and four militants were killed on Wednesday in an attack by suspected al-Qaeda insurgents on military headquarters in the southern city of Aden.
The assailants crashed a car packed with explosives into the building gate, triggering a gunfight with the guards, said independent website Almasadar Online, citing an unnamed security official.
“An unspecified number of the gunmen stormed the headquarters in an attempt to control its offices,” the official added. No arrests were reported.
State—run news agency SABA said the attack by “terrorists from al—Qaeda” had been foiled.
The violence is the latest in a series of attacks against Yemeni security forces.
Last week, 22 soldiers were killed in an attack by unidentified gunmen at a security checkpoint in the south—eastern province of Hadramawt.
In 2012, the Yemeni army launched a US—backed campaign against militants with suspected links to al—Qaeda, whose branch in the Arabian Peninsula country is among the most active in the world.
