Five car bombs struck in predominantly Shia cities and districts in central and southern Iraq on Monday, killing 36 people and wounding dozens, officials said.

No one claimed responsibility but coordinated bombings in civilian areas are a favourite strategy used by al-Qaeda in Iraq. The deadliest attack was in the southern city of Amarah, where two parked car bombs went off simultaneously .
