A fire in a hospital in South Korea killed 21 people early on Wednesday, media reports said.

The blaze in Jangseong, 300 kilometres south of Seoul, injured eight other people including six who were in critical condition, the Yonhap News Agency reported.

The unit where the fire occurred housed patients in their 70s and 80s with Alzheimer’s disease, stroke and other illnesses, and most had little or no mobility, The Korea Times daily reported.

The fire broke out at 12:27 am (1527 GMT Tuesday) but was brought under control within 30 minutes, Yonhap quoted fire official Kim Kyong Man as saying.

The cause of the fire was unknown, the report said.

A single nurse was reported to be on duty in the unit at the time of the fire.
