A police officer was shot and killed, and three people wounded during an attack on a main market in northern Nigeria, police said on Tuesday.

Unidentified gunmen carried out the attack late on Monday in Darazo, a town in Bauchi state, Bauchi police commissioner Mohammad Ladan said.

“Monday is the market day of Darazo”, Mr. Ladan said. “The attackers wanted to take advantage of the commercial activities. One of our men was shot.” Police suspected the Islamist extremist sect Boko Haram of being behind the attack.

Monday’s shooting was the first deadly attack since the beginning of the month of Ramadan in July.
