A Muslim woman model facing caning for drinking beer in public in Malaysia cannot appeal against the verdict as the 14-day deadline to seek relief from the Sharia court has expired, a government official has said.

On July 20, the Pahang Sharia High Court had fined Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno (32) 5,000 ringgit (Rs. 60,000) and ordered her to be given six strokes with a bamboo cane for drinking beer as consuming alcohol is forbidden under country’s Sharia law.

State Religious Department chief prosecutor Abdul Rahim Jaafar said it was now up to Syariah Chief Judge Abdul Hamid Abdul Rahman to revise the decision.
