“India, help us to defeat western conspiracy against our country!” screamed a banner purportedly put up by Students of University of Colombo outside India House, residence of the Indian High Commissioner.
It is not clear if the High Commissioner Ashok Kantha saw it but the general mood, post Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's statement on India's inclination , can be gauged from the banner.
“It is natural for us to ask India through all channels that we have to reconsider its decision,” said an official who did not want to be named.
Sri Lanka is lobbying at Geneva and elsewhere and organising protests across the country even as the day for the introduction of the resolution, which calls upon the Sri Lankan government to implement recommendations of its own committee that went into the ethnic question, draws near.
“We came determined [to Geneva]. We have a strong case,” said the President's spokesperson Bandula Jayasekara over the phone. “No country should be intrusive. We need our time and space. If we don't care for our people, no one else would. U.S. should not try to be divisive,” he added.
