Authorities say the Galeras volcano in southeastern Colombia has erupted. There are no immediate reports of deaths or injuries.

Carlos Ivan Marquez, national aid director for the Red Cross, says officials may evacuate 8,000 people as a precaution after the eruption at 7:43 p.m. Saturday.

The 14,110-foot Mount Galeras is Colombia’s most active volcano. It sits just over 10 kilometres (6 miles) from Pasto, the provincial capital of 500,000 people.

The volcano is near the border with Ecuador, some 520 kilometres (320 miles) southwest of Bogota.
