Need good ties with Pak: Trump

April 29, 2016 12:23 am | Updated September 09, 2016 12:21 am IST - WASHINGTON:

Inchoate though it may be, there appears to be one foreign policy issue on which Republican frontrunner Donald Trump is in agreement with President Barack Obama — the approach towards Pakistan.

Much like the Obama administration, Mr. Trump believes that Pakistan must be held close because it is an unstable state with nuclear weapons. Asked how he would deal with Pakistan that received U.S. aid but reneged on its promises, he said: “Yes, but the problem with Pakistan, where they have nuclear weapons — which is a real problem… But Pakistan is semi-unstable. We don’t want to see total instability. It’s not that much, relatively speaking. We have a little bit of a good relationship. I think I’d try and keep it.”

A running theme of Mr. Trump’s campaign has been about countries receiving American aid and not being sufficiently loyal; he put Pakistan also in that category during an event in Indianapolis. He, however, named India as a country that was willing to help the U.S.
