A top aide to the Iranian president says the diplomatic cables released by WikiLeaks were fabricated by the U.S. and aimed at damaging the relations between Iran and its Arab neighbours.
Germany’s Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung reported Saturday that the head of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s office, Esfandiar Rahim Mashai, told the newspaper “these documents cannot be authentic.”
It quoted Mashai as saying that the leaked cables “certainly have no negative consequences” for Iran’s relations with the Arab world.
Iran’s nuclear programme, which it insists is only for peaceful energy production, has sent chills throughout the region. Several Arab countries, according to the cables published by WikiLeaks, expressed strong concern to the U.S. about it, including support for military strikes.
