A Sri Lankan journalist was shot at by unidentified persons on Friday night near his residence. He is said to be out of danger.
The Sunday Leader newspaper’s investigative journalist Faraz Shauketaly (52), a dual citizen of Sri Lanka and U.K., was shot in the neck. Speculation in the Sri Lankan media indicates that he could have been targeted for some of his writings, which relate to institutional wrong-doing.
Four years ago, the same newspaper’s editor, Lasantha Wickrematunge, was shot dead by a group of masked men in broad day light.

17 similar attacks in the last decade and some were killed and others
badly injured. The president promptly asks for a full investigation and
nothing happens after that. What is shocking here is that the
international community including the commonwealth nations which
proposes to holds its summit in 2013 ignoring these attacks hence
thumps inadvertently for more attacks of the kind.
The journalist covers human rights and accountability issues in the island nation.
This was the 12th assassination attempt or shot dead of a journalist in the last decade
and no one case was still solved. What is shocking in this how the commonwealth
nations, which was formed on the basis of freedom of speech and human rights, can
still want to go to this country and have their Heads of States summit in September
2013,. Will they be able to go their with their heads high to this island? They must all
speak up without any delay now.
