The U.N. says Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has arrived in Afghanistan for meetings with President Hamid Karzai and his former challenger.
The visit comes after a deadly attack on a U.N. guest house and as international diplomats are driving for a quick resolution to the country’s troubled election. The August 20 ballot was marred by fraud.
The president’s top challenger, former Foreign Minister Abdullah Abdullah, pulled out on Sunday from a runoff vote, effectively handing Mr. Karzai a victory.
It is still unclear if the vote will go forward on Saturday. The United Nations said in a statement that Mr. Ban would meet with the two parties “to assure them and the Afghan people of the continuing support of the United Nations toward the development of the country.”
