A top UN human rights official in Nepal on Tuesday expressed concern over threat to journalists in the country including the recent murder of media tycoon Jamim Shah.
In a statement, Richard Bennett, the Representative of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights in Nepal, condemned the threats against editors and publishers and describing them as sending “a chill through the entire community”.
Mr. Bennett asked State authorities to ensure a secure environment that facilitates full enjoyment of rights of freedom of expression as guaranteed by national and international human rights law.
“Unfortunately violence against the media is not rare in Nepal and has been witnessed especially against journalists working in the Terai,” he said.
Jamim Shah, Nepal’s controversial media tycoon, was shot dead in the heart of the capital Kathmandu on February 7.
