Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has appointed veteran Swedish diplomat Jan Eliasson as his new deputy.
Mr. Ban said on Saturday that Mr. Eliasson (71) will take over from Asha-Rose Migiro of Tanzania as U.N. deputy secretary-general on July 1.
Mr. Eliasson earlier was a UN special envoy for the Darfur region of Sudan, and had served as a U.N. General Assembly president and as world body’s humanitarian chief.
Mr. Eliasson has also been Sweden’s foreign minister and ambassador to Washington.
Mr. Ban also said that he’s chosen Susana Malcorra of Argentina, who has been U.N. undersecretary-general for field support since 2008, to be his chief of staff beginning April 1.
She succeeds Vijay Nambiar of India, the new U.N. special adviser for Myanmar.
