Two LTTE cadres, operating in Sri Lanka’s Eastern province for some time, have been gunned down by the Police Special Task Force (STF) in eastern Ampara district, army said on Wednesday.

The LTTE cadres were detected in the area close to Pirimune Lagoon in Kalmunai and the attack was launched on Tuesday night, it said.

According to security forces, the LTTE cadres had been operating in the Eastern province for some time.

Their bodies along with a T-56 firearm have been found during the search operations. Meanwhile, the Sri Lankan army troops engaged in search and clear operations in war-affected areas of Wanni recovered on Tuesday a haul of war materials hidden by the LTTE during their last moment in May.

Troops belonging to 57 Division conducted search operations in Kilinochchi area on Tuesday and recovered six anti-personal mines. The army also recovered six diesel barrels in Visuamadu area. The Task Force-8 troops engaged in search operations in Puthukkudiyirippu East and Vellamullivaikkal also recovered a cache of weapons, the Media Centre for National Security (MCNS) said.
