Turkey, which shares a long border with Syria, says it is preparing to deal with a possible influx of a large number of Syrian refugees.
Turkey already has set up a small camp in southern Hatay province for the 263 Syrians who fled their country on Friday.
Turkish President Abdullah Gul said at a televised news conference on Monday that his country is taking measures for “the worst—case scenario.”
Turkey has been urging Syria’s government to meet demands by pro—democracy activists protesting there, fearing that chaos in its southern neighbour could spark a refugee crisis on its borders.
Mr. Gul said he hopes that reforms are implemented in Syria and that the bloodshed stops.
Syria has defied international calls to stop its brutal crackdown on the unrest which has left hundreds of people dead.
