Turkey is appointing new military commanders following the resignation of the top brass in a dispute with the government.
President Abdullah Gul was scheduled to approve the new appointments on Thursday, at the end of a key annual military meeting to discuss officers’ promotions and dismissals.
Last week, the country’s chief of staff stepped down along with the chiefs of the navy, army and air force, frustrated over the arrests and prosecution of hundreds of officers for allegedly attempting to overthrow Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s Islamic—rooted government.
Erdogan’s government has opposed promoting generals implicated in the alleged coup plots.
The chief of staff resigned saying the officers are being punished before a court verdict.
