Three top leaders of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), including its acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, have been sent to jail after a Dhaka court denied them bail in several cases.

The two others, who were ordered to be in prison by Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Shahriar Mahmud Adnan on Sunday, are standing committee member Mirza Abbas and member secretary of the party’s Dhaka Metropolitan Unit, Abdus Salam.

The three opposition leaders saw their petitions turned down after surrendering before the trial court complying with a Supreme Court directive.

“This court has no jurisdiction to grant them bail in the murder cases as the Appellate Division had earlier cancelled their anticipatory bail granted by the High Court in the cases,” said the court.
