An official says a train has ploughed into a bus in western China, killing three people and injuring 80 others.

State media say at least 41 children under age 16 are among those injured in the accident on Thursday in Urumqi, the capital of Xinjiang region. All three people killed were adults.

Regional government spokesman Ma Xinchuan says 10 of those injured are in serious condition. The cause of the accident isn’t known, although the Xinhua News Agency says some passengers jumped out of windows before the bus was hit, suggesting that it may have become stuck while crossing the tracks.

Xinhua says the bus driver was slightly injured and is being questioned by police.
