An anti-coup activist in Thailand is calling for a rally on Sunday to defy the military government’s ban on protests, urging those opposed to the army takeover to wear masks and be ready for cat-and-mouse chases with soldiers in the capital.
The call on Friday by veteran activist Sombat Boonngam-anong raised concerns of a showdown.
The military junta, meanwhile, reiterated its ban on political gatherings and warned it will not tolerate protests against the May 22 coup.
On Thursday, the military deployed more than 1,300 troops and police to seal off a major Bangkok intersection to prevent a planned protest.
In the past week, the junta has acted to silence its critics and warned that it will not tolerate dissent.
