The president of the Tokyo Electric Power Co (TEPCO), operator of Japan’s damaged nuclear power station, is to visit Fukushima’s prefecture government Monday, a news report said.
Masataka Shimizu, 66, is expected to apologise to local officials for the ongoing crisis at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, which was crippled by the March 11 earthquake and ensuing tsunami, Jiji Press reported.
The plant’s power and cooling functions were knocked out, leading to explosions and radiation leaks.
Mr. Shimizu was hospitalized on March 29 after complaining of dizziness and high blood pressure. During his absence, TEPCO Chairman Tsunehisa Katsumata had taken charge of the crisis.
Mr. Shimizu has not appeared in the public since a March 13 news conference and has faced harsh criticism for keeping such a low profile.
